Artiqulate is a publication for the Adenauer Fellowship, a scholarship programme by the Media Programme Asia, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. The magazine is filled with photojournalistic works and articles from fellowship alumni. I was commissioned to take over the design and layout job from the project manager Lisa Wlaschek and work closely with her, as well as designing the logo for this new magazine.
One of the most salient features of Artiqulate is, for me, the relatively younger age range of the contributors and the fresh and daring touch coming from it, and I wanted that aspect to be reflected in the overall design. The artistic quality of many photographs accompanying the articles also needed accentuating. Factoring in all these distinctive qualities as well as the general nature of the publication and the organisation behind it plus the target audience, I settled on a minimalist and bold style that takes elements from both experimental contemporary design trends and familiar magazine design conventions.
